About the Design
The traditional Ulster emblem is rendered in a softened watercolor style and set against a lightly textured parchment-inspired background.
The province name “Ulster” appears above the emblem, while the Irish name “Cúige Uladh” completes the composition below. Together, these elements create a balanced heritage piece suited to both traditional and contemporary homes.
About the Ulster Emblem
The design features the Red Hand of Ulster displayed against a golden shield, one of the most recognizable symbols in Irish heraldry.
The open red hand has been associated with Ulster for centuries and reflects the province’s powerful Gaelic heritage. The bold red and gold create a strong heraldic contrast, while the softened watercolor treatment gives the historic emblem a warm and timeless finish.
Decorative Celtic-inspired detailing beneath the shield adds movement and character without overwhelming the traditional design.
The Meaning of Cúige Uladh
In Irish, cúige means province, while Uladh is the Irish name associated with Ulster. Together, Cúige Uladh means “the Province of Ulster.”
The word cúige originally meant “a fifth,” reflecting the traditional division of ancient Ireland into five provinces: Munster, Leinster, Connacht, Ulster, and the central province of Mide, or Meath.
Although Ireland is now generally described as having four provinces, the historic word cúige remains in use.
About Ulster
Ulster is traditionally formed by the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan, and Tyrone.
From the Atlantic coastline and the mountains of Donegal to the lakes, glens, and historic landscapes of the northeast, Ulster is a province shaped by Gaelic kingdoms, ancient traditions, and a deeply rooted sense of identity.
