The Meaning of Cúige Laighean
In Irish, cúige means province, while Laighean is the Irish name for Leinster. Together, Cúige Laighean means “the Province of Leinster.”
The word cúige originally meant “a fifth,” reflecting the traditional division of ancient Ireland into five provinces: Munster, Leinster, Connacht, Ulster, and the central province of Mide, or Meath.
Although Ireland is now generally described as having four provinces, the historic word cúige remains in use.
